Sermon Discussion Questions

Starter: Beside God, who in your life has loved you most?  What enabled them to love you in this way?

Group Discussion

  • Read 1 John 4:7-12.
  • In your opinion, what blocks people from loving one another?
  • Think of people you know who do not love.  What is blocking God’s love from flowing into their lives?
  • How do you think Jesus felt when he left heaven to become human?  What did he have to give up?  What frustrations did he experience?  What does this say about his love?
  • Our relationship with God starts with God, not with us.  He loves us first and pays for our sins.  Has anyone ever bought you a meal?  How did you feel? Did it make you want to share?  How does God’s loving us first make us want to love others?
  • What would church be like if everyone loved each other as Jesus loved us?
  • Is your spiritual walk growing your love capacity?  Why or why not?
  • In your experience, what are practical ways you can open yourself to receive God’s love?
