Starter: Describe a time when you saw someone say “no” to authority.  Was it the right thing to do?  Why or why not?

  • Read Daniel 3:1-12
  • In your opinion, why did Nebuchadnezzar erect the god statue?
  • In your opinion, what happens when government enforces a particular kind of worship?
  • Read Daniel 3:13-15
  • It is strange that despotic king like Nebuchadnezzar would give anyone a second chance.  What does it say about Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego that Nebuchadnezzar offers them a second chance?
  • Nebuchadnezzar thinks his power is greater than the power of the Hebrew God.  Do governments still think that way?  What examples can you think of?
  • Read Daniel 3:16-18
  • What words would you use to describe the faith of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego? 
  • In your opinion, what made Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego say, “Even if God does not save us, we will not serve your gods, or worship the image.”
  • Read Daniel 3:19-23
  • Nebuchadnezzar is clearly consumed by anger.  In your experience, do leaders make good decisions in anger?  Why or why not?
  • Read Daniel 3:24-27
  • What do you think Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego thought when they were thrown in the furnace?  What was it like for them to walk around in the flames?  What did the angel do for them?
  • What do you think Nebuchadnezzar thought when he saw the four men in the furnace?
  • Read Daniel 3:28-30
  • What does Nebuchadnezzar know at the end of the story that he does not know in the beginning of the story?
