Starter: Did you ever know anyone who had everything?  What was their life like?  Did you envy them?


Dig Deeper

  • Read Eccl. 1:11-15.
  • In your opinion, what do people do to understand their lives?  Does it work?
  • In your opinion, what realities do people have the hardest time accepting?
  • Read Eccl. 1:16-18
  • Who is the smartest person you know?  Who is the wisest person you know?  Are they the same?  Why or why not? 
  • Read Eccl. 2:1-2.
  • How would you define someone who “lives large?”  Where does this choice work for them?  Where does this choice work against them?
  • Read Eccl. 2:3.
  • Have you ever known someone who used drink, drugs, or food to get a kind of feeling?  How is his or her life turning out?
  • Read Eccl. 2:4-5.
  • Have you ever achieved something and didn’t make you as happy as you thought it would?  In your opinion, why?
  • Read Eccl. 2:6-8.
  • Complete this sentence:  “If I just had __________________, I’d be happy.”  Think about what life would be like five months after you got what you wanted.  What would life be like?
  • Read Eccl. 2:9-11.
  • Solomon declared that all his experiments failed.  Describe someone you know who is still chasing after something that can’t be caught.  How do we need to pray for that person?
